I wanted to construct something wearable and sustainable because caring for the environment must be our generation’s contribution to the only world we have and which is being heavily polluted by many of our actions, like what happens with the textile industry.
My Vetrine Journey
It has been a very enjoyable process because my original idea could be maintained through the different stages. I wanted to reuse a bed cover and I totally transformed it into a dress. The bottom part of it, with the fabric cut into stripes and woven in a square pattern was challenging but the result is very good. The ornamental flowers were made with unused and out-of-date Covid masks filters.
Sustainability Aspect
Your Actions / Explanation
Environmental
Use of donated and reused materials
Social
I just had to buy a zipper and I bought it locally, not online.
Financial
Very low cost and manual work only.
A Message to Consumers
I want them to know that this is a sustainable and totally upcycled garment that they can wear and make a difference as fashion consumers.
A Message to Future Learners
I would tell them to build relationships with ethical suppliers if they cannot use recycled materials or leftover pieces. It’s not easy to find reliable suppliers, perhaps certifications like Global Organic Textile Standard and Fair Trade International can help verify standards.
