The dress and cape are an inspiration on the question how we remember Frida Kahlo today. We remember the artist as a feminist, independent and feisty person; we remember her as a symbol of freedom and resilience. The cape reflects all of this, a loose white dress that reveals her chest. The cape represents her backpack, everything she has experienced in her life, which weighs heavily on her, but the rest of the world sees it as an example of freedom and self-improvement. The flowers are a nod to her Mexican roots and also add strength to the look. And all the parts are made from sustainable materials, donated bed sheets and scraps of paper from previous projects.
My Vetrine Journey
The biggest challenge was to handle the fabric for the cape and dress, as they are very large patterns and the fabric was what I had available. For this look, I used sheets. To do this, I had to put some pieces double instead of single. At first, I made the flowers with reused clothing, but the visual result was not what I expected. The solution was to remove them and look for a new technique with new materials and I found paper was better.
